On March 20, Locati LLC offered Sabbath Day Point, a landscape painting depicting Lake George, N.Y., by widely collected Hudson River School artist William Rickarby Miller. The painting hammered for $9,750 ($12,187 with buyers premium), the highest price paid for a work by the artist at auction since 2011. The title of the painting was discovered on the stretcher beneath the original backing paper during a careful examination of the painting prior to cataloging. The results of the sale were excellent, said co-owner Michael Locati. We were all excited when we discovered the title and signature on the stretcher of the painting; this was probably the first time it had been seen since the original framing was done many years ago. I think the bidding reflected similar excitement from buyers as well. Strong prices were also realized for jewelry, watches, coins, and objets de vertu. Competition was fierce for a Rolex Two-Tone Datejust mens watch, with a bidder in the room making the winning bid of $5,250. Prices reported and in captions do not include buyers premium.
