William Rickarby Miller Painting Soars At Locatis March Sale
Work Titled “Sabbath Day Point” Realizes $12,187
April 22, 2022
On March 20, Locati LLC offered Sabbath Day Point, a landscape painting depicting Lake George, N.Y., by widely collected Hudson River School artist William Rickarby Miller. The painting hammered for $9,750 ($12,187 with buyers premium), the highest price paid for a work by the artist at auction since 2011. The title of the painting was discovered on the stretcher beneath the original backing paper during a careful examination of the painting prior to cataloging. The results of the sale were excellent, said co-owner Michael Locati. We were all excited when we discovered the title and signature on the stretcher of the painting; this was probably the first time it had been seen since the original framing was done many years ago. I think the bidding reflected similar excitement from buyers as well. Strong prices were also realized for jewelry, watches, coins, and objets de vertu. Competition was fierce for a Rolex Two-Tone Datejust mens watch, with a bidder in the room making the winning bid of $5,250. Prices reported and in captions do not include buyers premium. Locatis April 2022 Sale, with bidding open on LiveAuctioneers, Invaluable, and Bidsquare, runs until Sunday, April 24. Bidders are encouraged to visit the companys Pineville, Pa., auction facility from April 18 to 23 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to preview.
