Witman Auctioneers Inc. of Manheim, Pa., are five years into holding sales on behalf of potter Ned Foltz and his late wife, Gwen Foltz. Ned Foltz is an active redware potter in Reinholds, Pa., and has a full show schedule. His shows are held at his studio/shop at 225 N. Peartown Road. Visit www.foltzpottery.com for his event schedule or further information. The Aug. 22 auction of items from his personal collection was held under a tent outside of the studio. About 150 items were sold, such as pottery ranging from contemporary to antique. Some southern pottery sold. Stauffer pewter and antique pewter sold. Other material included Kathy Yoder hooked rugs, assorted baskets, Strawser carvings (Dan Sr., Dan Jr., and Tim), Carlton carvings, Walter and June Gottshall carvings, Tom Loose wrought-iron utensils, a Larry Long wrought-iron utensil rack, a Romaine Foltz painting, a Barbara Strawser painting, and much more. These sales are partly hospitality events and unique to the special community of regional folk art collectors who faithfully attend and bid. There is complimentary homemade food, drinks, and snacks. For 50-plus years, Foltz pottery shows have been conducted the same way. And, there will be more auctions, according to Foltz, who, along with his late wife, amassed a vast collection. A carved nativity scene by Dan Strawser Sr. sold for $302.50, and one of his Adam and Eve scenes, dated 1986, brought $1,622.50. A Walter and June Gottshall (WJG) carving of a rabbit went for $605; a tall WJG eaglet, $577.50; and an unusual WJG deer sold for $198. To learn more, call Witman Auctioneers at 717-665-5735.
