By Karl Pass - July 17, 2020
Father and son team Luke and Clarke Witman, of Witman Auctioneers in Manheim, Pa., conducted a public sale on behalf of potter and collector Ned Foltz and his late wife Gwen Foltz at The Foltz Pottery shop outside Reinholds on June 27. The Witmans have been holding sales for the Foltzes since 2015. There are typically two a year held under a tent outside of Neds studio/shop. An assortment of Foltz redware was sold, as were baskets, tin decorations and various decorations and folk art. Some of Neds collection of Walter and June Gottshall folk carvings were sold and did well. Walter Luke Gottshall (1921-2018) of Reinholds, Pa., married June E. (Fiant) Gottshall in 1941. The two lived near Galen Hall on the Berks and Lancaster County border. He served in WWII and was a member of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen. He was the son of Luke and Fannie (Klapp) Gottshall and nephew to Hattie (Klapp) Brunner. Walter and Junes daughter is folk painter Barbara Strawser of Schaefferstown. Today, Barbara is primary caretaker for June (age 99). Walter was a skilled folk carver, and June painted his carvings. For many years, they participated in the Kutztown Folk Festival among other quality folk art shows. Prolific artisans, the couples work is regionally collected and highly sought after by collectors of Pennsylvania German folk art. Its a bull market for Walter and June Gottshall (WJG) folk carvings. A large rooster with head down pecking an ear of corn sold to a young collector for $1,540. It is an auction record for a Gottshall rooster. As is tradition with these auctions, Ned makes a special item to be sold as the final lot of the sale. This time he made an incredible locomotive with coal car. A master of hand-built work, the piece brought $5,500, going to a local collector. The next Witman auction on behalf of Foltz is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 22.
