York Show Takes Over Fairgrounds
Semiannual Show Held Sept. 22 And 23
By Karl Pass - November 03, 2023
Melvin Arions Original 182nd semiannual York Antiques Show and Sale took place Sept. 22 and 23 in Memorial Hall East on the York Fairgrounds in downtown York, Pa. Many of the dealers reported that pre-show buying and selling was good and the energy at opening was strong for a few hours, yet, later in afternoon and the second day were a bit slow. Some of the exhibiting dealers polled still wish the show was open on Sunday to accommodate more opportunity for those people who work Monday to Friday and have conflicts on Saturday. Some are glad to have a two-day format, given they can cut down on expenses such as hotel stays and meals. The booth rent didnt change when the switch was made from a three-day show to two. York remains a popular destination event for many show goers, especially from the Baltimore and D.C. region, yet the current marketplace appears to be shifting toward regional shows that have considerably lower cost overhead for dealers and bring in many of the same people to shop. This is evident by fewer dealers doing the York Show and an increase in the waitlist to do other shows. Two examples are the Lititz and Elverson Shows. Arion does an outstanding job in presenting a solid roster and marketing his show, which showcased great material in a time when finding items to sell is on the forefront of many dealers minds. It is very challenging to find things right now, and competing at auction is tougher than ever, one exhibiting dealer observed regarding the state of the marketplace. The Winter edition of the Original York Show will take place Friday and Saturday, Feb. 2 and 3. To contact Melvin Arion, call 302-875-5326.
